In our 41st episode, we welcome poet, singer and educator Gina Loring to our podcast to talk about an article of her’s at The Root, “The Wounded Explaining the Wound,” which describes a hate speech incident Gina encountered while in a graduate studies program at the USC Rossier School of Education. According to the Rossier School of Education’s mission statement: “[USC] work[s] to improve learning opportunities and outcomes in urban settings and to address disparities that affect historically marginalized groups. We teach our students to value and respect the cultural context of the communities in which they work and to interrogate the systems of power that shape policies and practices.” However, neither value nor teaching respect for cultural context was Gina’s experience.
